Special Message from the Rector: In-Person Worship Begins Outdoors this Sunday – Available in full online here. From our Rector
The Rev. Dr. Jared C. Cramer, SCP
However, instead of the Epidemic Spread decreasing to less than 20 per million in our region, it has begun increasing again, currently at nearly 30 million. This means that in-person worship indoors remains an unsafe option, much to my dismay.
At the same time, I am delighted to tell you that at a special meeting of the Coronavirus Response Team last night, we decided to open outdoor worship starting this Sunday, August 30, in English at 8:30am and in Spanish at 12:45pm. The Vestry affirmed that plan at their own regular meeting later that evening.
The lawn at the corner of 6th and Washington will be setup with signs marking the proper social-distancing between rows. You will be asked to bring your own chairs (if you do not have folding chairs to bring, contact me and I will ensure they are provided for you) and distance your household at least six-feet side to side from people in the same row as you. You will also need to wear a mask for the entirety of the liturgy. For the distribution of communion, I will come to each household. You will extend your hands and I will drop a wafer into your hands. Once I leave you space, you can remove your mask and consume the sacrament.
In order to do this, a few things have happened or need to happen:
- I have created a new JOLT ministry (St. John's Outdoor Liturgy Team) – This team will be responsible for setting up for the 8:30am liturgy, serving as hosts / ushers during that liturgy, and cleaning up after that liturgy so that it is ready for our Spanish-speaking members to get it ready for their service at 12:45pm. You can see the plan for that Team and our outdoor liturgy online here.
- I am hoping to get eight to twelve parishioners to serve on that team on a rotating basis. The current plan is three JOLT members, a Verger, and the Sexton to serve each Sunday. If you would be willing to serve on this team, click here and I will add you. We do have people already signed up and scheduled for this Sunday.
- If you would like to attend worship this Sunday outdoors at 8:30am, we're asking you to please sign up in advance. This will ensure that we have enough space for everyone and also will enable us to have your information for contact tracing, should that become necessary. You can sign up for the August 30 8:30am liturgy in English online here and the 12:45pm liturgy in Spanish online here.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
